UN RACCONTO DI STELLO COLLINI

Sono nato il 25 agosto 1937 all’ultimo piano di una casa di cinque piani, al n. 4 di Via Pallini (oggi Scala Wilkelman), di fronte al castello di San Giusto a Trieste, in Italia, nello stesso appartamento in cui nacque mio padre, ma lui è nato sotto l’Austria e sotto l’Italia. 

All’inizio del 1954 avevo sedici anni e studiavo al collegio di Triestino quando fu deciso che l’Italia sarebbe tornata a Trieste entro ottobre di quell’anno. Per questo motivo Italia e Australia decisero di aprire un passaggio di Triestini in Australia. Mio padre, che all’epoca aveva 43 anni, si lamentava giocando a carte in un’ osteria e scommise che se avesse perso, avrebbe lasciato Trieste con la prima barca per l’Australia. Nel giro di tre settimane mi rimosse da scuola, preparò tutti i suoi averi, compresa la prima lavatrice accumulata dagli americani, e mentre io e mia madre piangevamo, non volendo lasciare Trieste, il 15 marzo 1954 salimmo a bordo della Castel Verde, la prima nave che salpò da Trieste per l’Australia.

“I was born in the late 25 August 1937 on the last floor of a five story house in No. 4 Via Pallini ( now Scala Wilkelman) facing the castle of St. Giusto in Trieste Italy.              

I was born in the same apartment as my father, but he was born under Austrian and Iunder Italy.In the early 1954 I was sixteen and studding in the Triestino college when it was decided that Italy was returning to Trieste by October that year. For this reason it was decided by Italy and Australia to open the passage of Triestini to Australia.   My father at the time 43 years old wails playing card in a Osteria made a bet that he would leave Trieste with the first boat for Australia. Within three weeks he took me out of school packed all his possessions  including the first washing  machine accrued from the Americans, and with me and my mother crying, not wanting to live Trieste, on the 15 March 1954,we boarded the Castel Verde  the first ship to leave Trieste for Australia.”
